History of Barclays Bank Online and offline
Barclay’s history began in 1690 when John Freame and Thomas Gould started trading on Lombard Street, London under the name Goldsmith Bankers. They gave loans to merchants and businessmen. The name Barclays became associated with the business in 1736 when James Barclay, son-in-law of John Freame joined the business, although it was not until 1896 that the company became known as Barclays bank.
Barclays and company were created in 1896 as a result of a merger between 20 small private family banks. It changed its name to Barclays Bank Limited in 1917 and in 1982 it became a public limited company.
Barclays Bank PLC has since become a leader in innovation, funding the world’s first industrial steam railway, naming the UK’s first female branch manager and introducing the world’s first ATM machine. It is now the world’s largest financial services providers, offering banking, investment banking, and investment management services to customers in over 50 countries, and employing more than 130,000 people worldwide.
