History

Credit Suisse Group was founded in 1856 by Alfred Escher the prominent politician, business leader, and pioneer.

The company was founded under the name Schweizerische Kreditans to finance the expansion of the railroad as well as further industrialization in Switzerland.

Credit Suisse played a substantial role in the economic development of Switzerland, helping the country develop its currency system, funding entrepreneurs and investing in the Gotthard railway, which connected Switzerland to the European rail system in 1882.

The initial stock of the company was issued with a value of three million francs, but within just three days the total value of subscriptions amounted to 218 million francs. The bank was a huge success from its foundation.

In 1942, the bank opened its first international branch in New York City. The bank signed a partnership agreement with The First Boston Corporation in the U.S., in 1978 acquiring a controlling stake in the firm 10 years later, after which the bank was renamed Credit Suisse First Boston.

In 2006, Credit Suisse Group rebranded to create an “integrated bank,” and its investment bank dropped the First Boston affiliation and became known as simply Credit Suisse.
