The groups’ history dates back over five centuries to the establishment of Rolo Banca in 1473 when Monte di Pieta was established in Bologna. The contemporary history of Unicredit begins from a merger of nine of Italy's largest banks in 1998.
In 1998, UniCredito Italiano was created via the merger of Credito Italiano, Rolo Banca, Cariverona, Cassa di Risparmio di Torino, Cassamarca, Cassa di Risparmio di Trento e Rovereto and Cassa di Risparmio di Trieste.
In 1999, a federal banking model was introduced, and the development of a customer-based segmentation took place along with expansion into the growth markets of Central and Eastern Europe.
The expansion process started with the acquisition of the Polish bank Bank Pekao. In 2001, a reorganisation by market segments was implemented, with a multi-specialist structure in three main business divisions: Retail, Corporate, Private Banking and Asset Management.
In 2002, the expansion into growth markets continued with the acquisition of Zagrebacka Banka (Croatia), Demirbank Romania — then UniCredit Romania — and Živnostenskå Banka (Czech Republic), followed by an agreement with Koç (Turkey).
In 2005, UniCredit combined its business with the German HVB Group, and in 2007 with the Italian Capitalia Group. It is now a banking group based in Milan that also includes (amongst others) Bank Austria and Hypovereinsbank
